Berea District – the Kome cave dwellings and Teyateyaneng

Berea District is home to the famous cave dwellings of Ha Kome, where families built homes of mud and stone under a large rock overhang in the 19th century. Their descendants still live there, making the caves a remarkable reminder of how people found shelter in troubled times.

The district's capital, Teyateyaneng, is known as a centre of Basotho crafts, especially weaving of tapestries and rugs. Berea lies in western Lesotho, bordering South Africa's Free State Province and the districts of Leribe, Thaba-Tseka and Maseru. Farming villages and markets shape daily life here.
