Hamilton, Bermuda – capital of the islands since 1815

Hamilton became the capital of Bermuda in 1815, when the seat of government moved here from St George's, and the city has been at the political heart of the islands ever since. It was planned well before that: in 1790 the government set aside 145 acres for a future capital, and the settlement was incorporated in 1793 and named after Governor Henry Hamilton. The town became a city in 1897, and the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity was consecrated in 1911. Today this small port is Bermuda's financial and commercial centre and a favourite stop for visitors, though only a few hundred people live within its boundaries.
