Rivière Noire District – the drier western side of Mauritius
Rivière Noire, or Black River, is the district on the western side of Mauritius, and it stands apart from the rest of the island because it receives noticeably less rainfall. With an area of 259 square kilometres it is the third largest district by size, yet with about 80,939 inhabitants in 2015 it is the smallest by population, so the landscape still sets the tone: forested uplands and deep gorges inland, and a west coast of lagoons watched over by the rock of Le Morne. The district is mostly rural, but it also takes in the western parts of Port Louis and of Quatre Bornes. Share your memories, stories and old photographs with us.
