Chitipa District – Malawi's northernmost district, once called Fort Hill

Chitipa is the northernmost district of Malawi's Northern Region, and its capital, also called Chitipa, was formerly known as Fort Hill. That position at the very top of the country defines it: the district borders Karonga District and reaches the frontiers with Tanzania and Zambia, which has long made it a meeting point of peoples and languages, with Chitumbuka the most widely spoken. It covers 4,288 square kilometres and is home to 234,927 people, and it is divided into five main areas: Misuku in the east, Kameme in the north, Bulambia at the centre, and Wenya and Nthalire in the south.
