ǁKharas Region – Namibia's southernmost and largest region
ǁKharas is the southernmost, largest and least densely populated of Namibia's fourteen regions, and its name reflects the presence of the Karas mountain range in the south. That combination of great distances and few people is what gives the region its character: wide gravel plains, dry riverbeds and the deep gorges of the Fish River Canyon, with the Atlantic Ocean forming the western boundary. Keetmanshoop is the capital, and the region also takes in Karasburg, Lüderitz and Oranjemund, along with the self-governed villages of Aroab, Berseba, Bethanie, Koës and Tses. Mining, farming and the sea have long provided a living here. Share your memories, your family stories and your old photographs with the other members.
