Omusati Region – mopane country and the Ruacana Falls

Omusati takes its name from the Oshindonga word for the mopane, the tree that dominates the landscape here, and the region is best known for the Ruacana Falls, among the largest waterfalls in Africa. It is also home to the Omugulugwombashe heritage site, where the Namibian struggle for independence began in 1966, a place remembered across the country. Outapi is the capital, and the towns of Okahao, Oshikuku and Ruacana, together with the self-governed village of Tsandi, lie within the region. Life here follows the rhythm of the rains, the cattle and the fields. We would be glad to read your memories and family stories and to see your old photographs.
