Zambezi Region – the Caprivi Strip, renamed in 2013

Until 2013 this region was known as Caprivi, a name that goes back to 1890: in the Heligoland-Zanzibar exchange between Britain and the German Empire, the strip of land was transferred to German South West Africa, and it was named after Chancellor Leo von Caprivi, who negotiated it to give access to the Zambezi. Before that the area was known as Itenge and lay under the rule of the Lozi kings, and in the late nineteenth century it was administered as part of the British protectorate of Bechuanaland. During the First World War it came under British administration again. Today the region, with its capital Katima Mulilo, counts 142,373 inhabitants. Share your memories, stories and old photographs.
