Hardap Region – the region named after its great dam
Hardap takes its name from the Hardap Dam, the reservoir on the Fish River that gives this dry part of southern Namibia its water and its name. Mariental is the capital, and the region also contains the towns of Rehoboth and Aranos and the self-governed villages of Gibeon, Gochas, Kalkrand, Stampriet and Maltahöhe. It is a land of wide farms and long horizons, reaching westwards towards the dunes and gravel plains of the Namib, where visitors come for some of the most striking desert scenery in the country. Water, livestock and distance have always shaped life here. We would be glad if you shared your memories, your family stories and your old photographs.
