Omaheke Region – the sandveld on the edge of the Kalahari
Omaheke is the Otjiherero word for sandveld, and the name tells you almost everything: this eastern region is the western extension of the Kalahari, a country of red sand, camelthorn trees and wide cattle farms. It is the least populous of Namibia's fourteen regions, and its capital is Gobabis, long known as a centre of the cattle trade. The self-governed villages of Otjinene, Leonardville and Witvlei also lie here. The region borders Botswana, and that frontier has always meant movement of people, herds and goods across the sand. Share with the other members your memories, your family stories and your old photographs of this quiet, wide land.
