Erongo Region – named after the mountain on its skyline
Erongo takes its name from Mount Erongo, a well-known landmark that rises above the plains and is visible for miles around. The region stretches from those inland mountains to a long shoreline on the Atlantic Ocean, and that contrast between desert, mountain and cold sea gives it its character. Swakopmund is the capital, and the region also contains Walvis Bay, Henties Bay and Omaruru, as well as the towns of Arandis, Karibib and Usakos, all linked by paved roads. In 2011 some 150,809 people lived here, many of them working in the port, in mining or in tourism. Share your memories, your stories and your old photographs with us.
