Oshikoto Region – the region named after Lake Otjikoto

Oshikoto takes its name from Lake Otjikoto, the deep sinkhole lake that is one of the best-known natural features of northern Namibia and has long attracted visitors and stories alike. The capital of the region is Omuthiya, which took over that role in 2008 from Tsumeb, the mining town that remains one of the main settlements, together with Oniipa. The region stretches from the drier farming and mining country in the south to the densely settled north, so its communities live in quite different landscapes while sharing the same region.
