Yaren – the de facto capital of Nauru

Yaren, on the southern coast of the island, is the de facto capital of Nauru and the place where the country's government offices are located. That role makes it the district most visitors see first and the one that appears on maps of the republic worldwide. The district was formerly known as Makwa and Moqua, older names that are still remembered locally, and it is coextensive with the Yaren constituency, so its boundaries serve both administration and elections. Life here mixes official business with ordinary island routines along the coast road. Do you have memories of Yaren, or photographs from earlier years? We warmly invite members to share their own stories here.
