Anabar district – home of the Deiboe and Irutsi clans
Anabar's story is told through its clans. Tradition holds that its first inhabitants were Deiboe clanspeople led by Deianoang, who brought his family to safety from fighting at Atemor's open field. The Irutsi clan is said to have arisen among the rocky ground at Abodeatsi, where five people sheltering there later intermarried and their descendants spread along the rocky stretches of the district. Anabar, together with neighbouring Ijuw, is believed to have been among the earliest areas affected by the sea more than three thousand years ago. The district had its own way of speaking, known locally as Kin'nir, and its pond Tibinor was the deepest on the island. Share your own stories and photographs with us.
