Buada district – once Arenibok, renamed Buada in 1890
Buada carried the ancient name Arenibok from as early as the 1500s until the late 1800s. In 1889 the Germans referred to it as Bush Village after new boundaries were agreed, and in 1890 local people gave it the name Buada, which it still bears today. The district was home above all to the Eamwit clan and to the last few members of the Irutsi, with families of the Emea and Deiboe clans living alongside them. It was here, at a wedding festival in the hamlet of Aujo in 1878, that a shooting led to the death of a young man and to a decade of tribal conflict, remembered soberly on the island. Buada is landlocked, with its lagoon and richer soils. Share your memories and photographs here.
