Auckland Region – one council for the whole region since 2010

On 1 November 2010 the Auckland region became a unitary authority administered by the Auckland Council, replacing the previous regional council and seven local councils. In the same process an area in the south-eastern corner was transferred to the neighbouring Waikato region. It was the largest reorganisation of local government the area had seen, and it shaped how the region has been planned and governed ever since. Known in Māori as Tāmaki Makaurau, the region takes in the metropolitan area, smaller towns, rural country and the islands of the Hauraki Gulf. It is home to 34 per cent of New Zealand's residents on the second-smallest land area of any region. Share your memories and photographs here.
