Western Province – the province of the great Fly River
Western Province stretches across the south-west of Papua New Guinea, from the lowlands and wetlands of the Fly River to the mountains of the interior, and it shares a land border with the Indonesian provinces to the west. Daru is the provincial capital, while Tabubil is the largest town; Kiunga, Ningerum, Olsobip and Balimo are other important settlements. The province is so closely identified with its great river that the provincial government uses the name Fly River Provincial Government, although that name has not been changed in the national constitution. Rivers, savanna and village gardens shape daily life here. Share your own memories, stories and photographs with the community.
