East Sepik Province – life along the mighty Sepik River

East Sepik takes its name and much of its character from the Sepik, one of the great rivers of the Pacific, whose winding course and seasonal floods have shaped village life for generations; the river communities are widely known for their carving and their ceremonial houses. The province covers about 43,426 square kilometres and had an estimated population of 450,530 at the 2011 census, giving a density of roughly ten people per square kilometre. Wewak, on the north coast, is the provincial capital. Farming, fishing and river trade remain central today. Members are invited to share their memories, family stories and photographs of the province.
