Morobe Province – from the old outpost of Morobe to the city of Lae

The province takes its name from Morobe, once an outpost of the German New Guinea Company south-east of Lae, known in that period as Adolfhafen. European contact came earlier: in 1793 Antoine Bruni d'Entrecasteaux sailed into the gulf he named Huon, and in 1874 John Moresby charted the Huon Gulf and the mouth of the Markham River. In 1884 Otto Finsch selected Finschhafen as the company's main settlement. Today Morobe is the most populous province, with Lae as its capital, the Huon Peninsula and the Markham valley within its borders, and at least 101 languages spoken.
