Oro Province – the Papuan coast beneath the Owen Stanley Range

Oro Province, officially still Northern Province, lies on the Papuan Peninsula between the mountains and the sea. Its coastline, river valleys and volcanic soils have long supported gardens and villages, and oil palm is today the principal primary industry. Popondetta is the provincial capital, and Oro is the only province in the country where the Anglican Church is the major denomination, a legacy of long missionary presence. With around 176,000 inhabitants across some 22,800 square kilometres, it borders Morobe, Central and Milne Bay provinces. Members are warmly invited to share their memories, family stories and photographs of Oro.
