Gulf Province – where the great rivers meet the Papuan Gulf
Gulf Province is shaped by water. The Kikori, Turama, Purari and Vailala rivers wind down from the interior and meet the sea in the wide Papuan Gulf, creating a landscape of lowland deltas, grassland flood plains and mountains further inland. Villages along the waterways have long depended on canoes, sago and fishing, and river routes have connected them with their neighbours for generations. Kerema is the provincial capital. With around 107,000 inhabitants across 34,472 square kilometres, it is one of the least populous provinces in the country. Members are invited to share their memories, stories and photographs of the Gulf.
