West New Britain Province – home of the Nakanai, Kove and their neighbours

West New Britain occupies the western part of the island of New Britain, with Kimbe as its provincial capital and a single land border, with East New Britain. Seven major peoples live here — the Nakanai, Bakovi, Kove, Unea, Maleu, Arowe and Kaulong — speaking around 25 languages, a diversity typical of this volcanic island coast. The Kove, also known as Kombe, became widely known through the work of the anthropologist Ann Chowning in the 1960s, and people from the province are still called Kombes. Around 264,000 people live across 20,387 square kilometres. Members are invited to share their stories, memories and photographs.
