East New Britain Province – the 1994 eruption that reshaped Rabaul

In 1994 a volcanic eruption largely destroyed Rabaul, the province's old capital and long one of the most important harbour towns in the region. The administration moved a short distance to Kokopo, which has been the provincial capital ever since, while Rabaul's ash-covered streets remain a powerful reminder of how closely life here is bound to the volcanoes. The province takes in the north-eastern part of New Britain together with the Duke of York Islands, some 15,816 square kilometres in all, and its recorded population grew from 220,133 in 2000 to 328,369 in 2011.
