Enga Province – the highland province created at independence in 1975
Enga became a province in its own right in 1975, when it was separated from the neighbouring Western Highlands at the time of national independence. Unusually for Papua New Guinea, one language is spoken across all five of its districts, and about 500,000 people live in this northern highland country. Europeans, mostly Australian gold prospectors, first entered the area from the east in the late 1920s; the best-known journey was made in the early 1930s by Mick Leahy and his party, who travelled from the future Mount Hagen to the site of Wabag. In May 2024 a landslide caused great loss of life in Maip Muritaka. Share your memories and photographs with us.
