Eastern Highlands Province – home of the Asaro mud masks
The Eastern Highlands are widely known for the Asaro mud mask, worn at shows and festivals within the province and elsewhere in the country, and one of the most recognisable images of highland culture. Goroka, the provincial capital, sits in a fertile valley and is reached both by air and along the main Highlands Highway, the road that ties the highlands to the coast. The province covers 11,157 square kilometres and had 579,825 inhabitants at the 2011 census, bordering Madang, Morobe, Gulf and Simbu provinces. Members are invited to share their own memories, stories and photographs of the Eastern Highlands.
