Peleliu – the island marked by the Battle of Peleliu

Peleliu is remembered worldwide for the Battle of Peleliu, one of the hardest-fought engagements of the Second World War in the Pacific, which left deep traces on the island and its people. Long before that, Peleliu was divided into five traditional villages — Teliu, Ngerkeiukl, Ngesias, Ngerdelolk and Ngerchol — and although little remains on the surface, their locations and features, such as the stone platforms called odesongel, are preserved in oral tradition and still give identity to families and clans. The lagoon and rock islands have always been rich in fish, shellfish and timber. Members are invited to share their memories, stories and photographs.
