Ngchesar – terraces dated to between 491 and 1150 AD
The terraces in the village of Ngerngesang are among the archaeological sites that give Ngchesar its long perspective: radiocarbon dating places them between 491 and 1150 AD, evidence of communities who shaped these hillsides many centuries ago. Like the rest of Palau, Ngchesar passed through a series of outside administrations — Spanish from the sixteenth century until 1899, then German until the end of the First World War, then Japanese until the end of the Second World War, and afterwards United States administration. Ngchesar became an autonomous state after Palau gained its independence. Members are invited to share their memories, stories and photographs.
