Angaur – charted by Europeans in 1543 as Los Arrecifes
The first sighting of Angaur recorded by Westerners came at the end of January 1543, when the Spanish expedition of Ruy López de Villalobos charted the islands as Los Arrecifes, the reefs; further Spanish expeditions followed in 1710 and 1712. Long before and long after, the island was divided among some eight clans, whose stone platforms, cemeteries and other features remain powerful symbols of identity for families and clans. Large quantities of shell found at archaeological sites show how intensively the lagoon and the waters beyond the reef were used, alongside garden plots on the island's pockets of soil.
