Kayangel – the northernmost atoll of Palau
Kayangel lies some 86 kilometres north of Koror, the northernmost state of Palau, a small atoll of about 1.4 square kilometres with the single hamlet of Orukei, and a population of 54 at the 2015 census. Like the rest of the country it passed through Spanish administration until 1899, then German, then Japanese, and after the Second World War United States administration, before Palau became independent. In 2013 Typhoon Haiyan flooded the whole atoll and destroyed every home; no lives were lost, but all 69 residents were affected.
