Makira-Ulawa – the island province east of Guadalcanal

Makira-Ulawa is one of the nine provinces of Solomon Islands, made up mainly of the island of Makira, east of Guadalcanal, together with Ulawa and smaller neighbouring islands. Its largest town and capital is Kirakira, on the northern coast of Makira, where the provincial administration, the wharf and the market draw people in from villages along the shore and in the interior. Life here has long been shaped by the sea, by gardens and coconut groves, and by communities that keep their own languages and customs. The province is also proud of its sporting life, including the football club Real Kakamora. Share your memories, photographs and family stories with the community.
