Temotu – the easternmost province of Solomon Islands

Temotu, whose name means simply 'the island' in several Polynesian languages, is the easternmost province of Solomon Islands and was formerly known as Santa Cruz Islands Province. Its land area is only 868 square kilometres, scattered across a wide stretch of ocean, which has always made seafaring and navigation central to life here. The province takes in the Santa Cruz group as well as outlying islands such as Tikopia and Vanikoro, the latter known far beyond the Pacific as the place where the La Pérouse expedition was lost in the eighteenth century. Today its communities live largely from gardens, fishing and voyaging. Share your memories and family stories with the community.
