Malaita – the most populous province of Solomon Islands
Malaita is the most populous province of Solomon Islands, home to 172,740 people in 2019 across an area of 4,225 square kilometres. It takes its name from its largest island, Malaita, also called Big Malaita or Maramapaina, and includes South Malaita, known as Maramasike, together with Sikaiana Island and the far-flung Ontong Java Atoll. The provincial capital is Auki. Villages along the coasts and in the mountainous interior keep strong traditions of language, kinship and custom, while many Malaitans have also settled in other parts of the country.
