Guadalcanal Province – an island named after a village in Seville

The island's name was given by Pedro de Ortega Valencia, who came from the village of Guadalcanal near Seville in Spain; centuries later the name became known worldwide through the long and costly campaign fought here during the Second World War. The province covers 5,336 square kilometres of largely forested country and had 154,022 inhabitants in 2019. In July 1983 Honiara, the national capital, was designated a separately administered Capital Territory of 22 square kilometres and is no longer part of the province, although it still serves as its provincial capital.
