Isabel Province – Santa Isabel Island and its capital Buala
Isabel Province is built around Santa Isabel Island, the long, mountainous island that carries the name given during the Spanish expedition of 1568 and where most of its roughly 31,420 residents lived in 2019. The provincial capital is Buala, linked to Honiara by scheduled flights from Fera Airport, a fifteen-minute boat ride away. The economy rests mainly on subsistence agriculture, with occasional plantations of cash crops such as copra, and on logging. Few visitors come, as roads, hotels and medical services are limited and malaria remains present. Share your memories, photographs and family stories with the community.
