Outer Islands – the coralline Seychelles far from the granite bank

The Outer Islands, or Coralline Seychelles, are all those islands that lie beyond the shallow Seychelles Bank on which the granitic Inner Islands rest. Known in Seychellois Creole as Zil Elwannyen Sesel and in French as Îles Eloignées, they are entirely of coral formation and scattered across the western Indian Ocean. Until 2008 they lay outside the administrative and electoral districts of Seychelles; that year, after the shrimp farm on Coëtivy closed, they were declared a district and the Islands Development Company was created. The resident population rose from about 500 in 2008 to 700 in 2016, and conservation work continues across the atolls. Share your own memories and photographs with the community.
