Takamaka – a southern district of Mahé named after a coastal tree

Takamaka is one of the twenty-six administrative regions of Mahé and lies on the southern part of the island, with a population estimated at around 3,000. It shares its name with the takamaka, the broad-crowned tree that shades so many Seychellois beaches. Life in the district follows the rhythm of the coast and the hills behind it: small settlements, gardens, fishing and the road that links the south to the rest of the island. Three other districts cover the main islands of Praslin and La Digue, so Takamaka is part of a very compact national map. Share your memories and family stories with the community.
