Shiselweni – the southern region where the Swazi nation took root
Shiselweni lies in the south of Eswatini and holds a special place in the nation's memory: it was at Zombodze, in what is today this region, that King Sobhuza I had his capital before moving it to the centre of the country in the early nineteenth century. The region covers 3,786 square kilometres and had 204,111 inhabitants in 2017, with Nhlangano as its administrative centre. It borders Lubombo in the northeast and Manzini in the northwest, and its rolling hills, homesteads and cattle shape everyday life.
