Salt Cay – the second largest of the Turks Islands

Salt Cay is the second largest of the Turks Islands, a small, low-lying island in the Turks and Caicos where the past is written into the landscape. Its name comes from the salt industry: for generations sea water was let into shallow ponds and the salt raked out by hand, and the old salinas, windmills and walls still mark the island. Its main settlement is Balfour Town, with stone houses and quiet lanes. Today only a few hundred people live here, and boats, a small airstrip and the winter passage of humpback whales connect the island to the wider world.
