Unguja South – the southern shores and villages of Zanzibar island
Unguja South forms the southern third of Zanzibar island, 854 square kilometres of coral rag country, coastal forest and long white beaches facing the Indian Ocean on three sides. Life here has always been tied to the sea and the land in equal measure: fishing from outrigger canoes, seaweed farming in the shallows, and spice and fruit gardens inland. The region is also home to protected forest where the rare Zanzibar red colobus monkey lives, and its beach villages have become well known to visitors from around the world. The regional capital is the town of Koani, and the region borders Unguja North and Mjini Magharibi. Members are warmly invited to share their own memories and photographs.
