Unguja North – Zanzibar's northern coast of fishing villages

Unguja North covers the northern tip of Zanzibar island, just 407 square kilometres bordered by the Indian Ocean on three sides, with Unguja South to the south-east and Mjini Magharibi to the south-west. Its villages have lived for generations from fishing, dhow building and the trade that has always moved along this coast, while inland the land carries clove, coconut and fruit gardens. In recent decades tourism along the northern beaches has become an important source of work, and the region counts among the more developed parts of the country. The regional capital is the town of Mkokotoni. We would be delighted if members added their own memories, photographs and family stories from the north of the island.
