Mjini Magharibi – home of the Stone Town of Zanzibar
Mjini Magharibi is home to the Stone Town of Zanzibar, one of Tanzania's seven World Heritage Sites and the best-preserved Swahili trading town on the East African coast, with its carved doors, narrow lanes and merchant houses built from coral stone. For centuries this harbour was a meeting point of African, Arab, Indian and European influences, and that mixture still marks the city's architecture, food and music. The region covers only 230 square kilometres on the western side of Zanzibar island, yet it is the most densely settled and most developed in the country; the 2012 census counted 593,678 residents. The regional capital is Zanzibar City. Share your own memories and photographs with fellow members.
