Pemba North – harbours and clove gardens around Wete

Pemba North takes in 574 square kilometres at the northern end of Pemba island, a landscape of fertile hills, clove and coconut gardens, mangrove creeks and small harbours. The Pemba Channel lies to the west and the open Indian Ocean to the north, and fishing and seafaring have shaped village life here for centuries, alongside the spice farming for which the island became known far beyond East Africa. The regional capital is Wete, the island's northern port and market town, and at the 2012 census the region counted 211,732 residents. If you have memories, old photographs or family stories from Pemba North, we would be glad to see you share them with other members.
