Grenadines – the only parish beyond the main island

The Grenadines parish is unique in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines: it is the only one not located on the main island, taking in the chain of small islands that runs south from Saint Vincent. Its capital is Port Elizabeth on Bequia, a harbour town with a long seafaring tradition of boatbuilding, fishing and inter-island trade that shaped life across the whole chain. Sailing, sheltered anchorages and the sea have always connected these communities more closely than any road could. The parish covers 44 square kilometres and had an estimated population of 9,200 in 2000. Members are warmly invited to share their own memories, photographs and family stories from the islands here.
