Vaisigano – the western tip of Savaiʻi, home of Vaʻai Kolone

Vaisigano occupies the western tip of Savaiʻi, with Asau as its capital; in Samoan the area is also called ʻItu Asau, the Asau district. Its best-known son came from the village of Vaisala: the chief Vaʻai Kolone, who served twice as Prime Minister of Samoa during the 1980s. The district's harbour at Asau, its forests and its long stretch of coast have shaped work and travel here for generations, and the 2016 census recorded 6,543 residents. Distance from the capital has helped keep village traditions and the authority of the matai strong. Members are warmly invited to share their own memories, photographs and family stories from Vaisigano.
