Palauli – the Taga blowholes and the Lilomaiava title
Palauli lies in two sections on the southern side of Savaiʻi, and its best-known feature is natural: lava tubes formed in the island's volcanic rock have created the Taga blowholes on the coast at Taga village, where the sea is driven high into the air and visitors come to watch. The paramount title of the district is Lilomaiava, conferred at Vailoa, which serves as the district capital and is also known as Vailoa i Palauli. In recent years the inland village of Sili has declined to allow a hydroelectric plant on traditional land, out of conservation and cultural concerns. The 2016 census counted 9,300 residents.
