Faʻasaleleaga – Safotulafai, home of the Mau a Pule movement
The traditional capital of Faʻasaleleaga, Safotulafai, where district chiefs and orators gather at the Fuifatu malae, was the main base of the Mau a Pule resistance movement against colonial rule. From it grew the national Mau movement, and in time the road that led to Samoa's political independence in 1962, which gives this district a central place in the country's story. Safotulafai also has close traditional links with Saleaula, the main village of the Gagaʻemauga district. Situated on the eastern side of Savaiʻi and facing the strait towards Upolu, Faʻasaleleaga counted 13,566 residents at the 2016 census. Members are warmly invited to share their own memories, photographs and family stories.
