Ātua – the district of Tua, son of Pili
According to tradition, Tagaloa-a-lagi entered Upolu, Savaiʻi and Tonga from Manuʻa, and the political divisions of Upolu trace back to his son Pili, whose three sons gave them their names: Tua founded Ātua, 'that of Tua', in the eastern third of the island, ʻAna founded Āʻana in the west, and Saga, born after the twins, gave his name to Tuamasaga in between. Ātua is ruled by the Tui Ātua together with the six senior orators of Lufilufi and thirteen senior matai who form the Fale Ātua, meeting on the great malae of Lalogafuʻafuʻa. The first Tui Atua, Lufasiaitu, is said to have lived around AD 700. Share your memories here.
