Aʻana – the western third of Upolu and the Tuiaana title
Tradition traces the political divisions of Upolu to Pili, son of Tagaloa-a-lagi: his son ʻAna founded Āʻana on the western third of the island, while his brothers gave their names to Ātua in the east and Tuamasaga in between. The paramount pāpā title of the district is the Tuiaana. Aʻana and Atua have historically been allies, apart from periods of tension caused by the ambitions of individual chiefs. The district covers 193 square kilometres, with a small exclave at Satuimalufilufi surrounded by Aiga-i-le-Tai, and had 23,265 residents at the 2016 census; its main centre is Leulumoega.
