Eastern Province – Chewa, Tumbuka and Nsenga country by the Luangwa

The history of the Eastern Province centres on Bantu communities whose origins lie in Luba, in what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and whose chieftainships long held authority across this land; as of 2020 the Chewa, Tumbuka and Nsenga were the largest communities in the region. During the 1960s, after independence, several districts saw unprecedented growth in infrastructure and agriculture, though that expansion later slowed along with the national economy. The province lies between the Luangwa River and the eastern border, covers about 51,476 square kilometres in fifteen districts, and had 1,592,661 residents at the 2010 census; its capital is Chipata. Members are invited to share their own memories and photographs.
