Western Province – Mongu and the Barotse floodplain
The Western Province encompasses most of the area long known as Barotseland, and its capital, Mongu, together with the neighbouring town of Limulunga, is regarded as the capital of Barotseland. Life here follows the Zambezi and its great floodplain: when the waters rise, communities move from the plain to higher ground, a rhythm marked by the Kuomboka, one of the best-known traditional ceremonies in the region. Transport has long shaped the province too. The main route in is the 590-kilometre Lusaka–Mongu road through Kaoma, and the Barotse Floodplain Causeway, completed by 2016, now carries it across to Kalabo.
