Central Province – Kabwe and the Mulungushi Rock of Authority

Central Province is considered the birthplace of Zambia's national movement: the United National Independence Party was founded in Kabwe by Kenneth Kaunda, who became the country's first president and served from 1964 to 1991. Just outside the capital stands the Mulungushi Rock of Authority, an isolated flat-topped hill where UNIP first met in 1960, away from the eye of the colonial administration; it is still used for political gatherings, now alongside a conference centre. Mining shaped the province early on, with the first mine opened in 1905 at what was then Broken Hill. The province covers 94,394 square kilometres in eleven districts. Share your memories here.
